CHAPTER FOURTEEN

Sariyn pointed to a small area just beyond where the purple overgrowth encroached on the city.

Isaac moved the vehicle into position with ease. He had done well driving the unfamiliar vehicle for the first time, but it was time to switch roles. She knew he was the better shot with a weapon if they needed his skill.

She looked at him. “You ready for this?”

“I have nothing else planned for today.”

She handed him the laser rifle as they watched the first of the relays being offloaded.

Ambrite had only been able to supply them with dart rifles which fired electrified projectiles that were inaccurate at best. Thankfully, their new AI friend had been able to find a way to recharge the laser rifle’s power cell. Isaac set the rifle to a nonlethal setting they believed would only cause an annoying burn to any aggressors, then set the rifle within easy reach. He took up one of the dart guns, making sure it was safe and ready.

“None of these weapons are great for shooting out of a moving vehicle,” Isaac complained.

“No other choices sadly. What would you have preferred?”

“Something shorter that I can move around in here easier, and maybe a higher rate of fire.” He smiled. “Better yet, a turret topside of this machine I can control from in here. Hell, I would be happy with a few of our security bots magnetized to the top of this thing.”

“Well, I can’t argue with that. Those four-armed monkey creatures Ambrite showed us seemed plenty capable of being a real threat. Still, I prefer we don’t kill them if we don’t need to.”

“We will find out soon enough. It looks like the network relay is secured, so let’s see what this purple jungle has to offer.”

At twenty-minutes in, the visibility was barely five meters. Large ferns spread in wide swaths that covered what remained of the buildings. Parts of the vine system seemed to twist around everything. Their main source of light now came from the vehicle itself.

“Keep an eye on the infrared,” Sariyn whispered, “we could be surrounded and never know it in this place.”

She regretted the words the moment they left her mouth, as a trio of blue-gray monkeys appeared directly in front of the vehicle. She knew the vehicle would hover well above where they stood, but she slowed the vehicle to a near stop anyway.

Isaac leaned out and took a few shots with the dart gun, causing one to buckle forward onto the ground as the other two sprang away.

“Don’t stop,” he yelled. “Try to swerve around them so they can’t get too close.”

She didn’t reply, just slammed the accelerator forward and weaved as far from the distracted creatures as she could.

Her heart was just slowing to a normal rhythm when two more of the creatures dropped from above, slamming onto their vehicle.

One of the beasts skittered directly for Isaac’s window, causing him to dive backwards out of his seat. He fired two darts into its chest before kicking it back out of the window.
